Weekend Excitement of the Bad Kind

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

When exactly the world filled up with assholes I’m not sure, but it happened. Claire is out of town for a couple of days, so I’m here on the farm by my lonesome. Since I don’t have to sling hay everyday it isn’t a huge deal. —and you just knoew this was coming— BUT! Someone, probably the same person as last time, noticed that we were both gone simultaneously, me out to dinner with my parents, she up at the cabin. For the third time some asshole let our horses out.

The firs time they cut the hot wire on the far back paddock. The second time they opened a gate, lowered the hot wire gap and released the horses from the middle paddock. Around the same time gasoline was being stolen from our storage buildings and cars. At that point we began to routinely lock the perimeter gate, and all the out buildings. Annoying and inconvienient but obviously a neccesary precaution.

Tonight there was, in my opinion, a very dangerous escalation. Again, someone made entry onto our property although the perimeter gate was locked, lowered the electric fence gap and unlatched a paddock gate releasing the three horses and the donkey. They also shot out or security light with a slingshot, pellet gun, BB gun or small caliber firearm. When it is daylight I will determine the tool used, but it was a projectile firing weapon.

Just to be clear, if I come upon a trespasser that is armed things will get very exciting in a hurry. Thus, I see this as a very dangerous escalation.

I have returned the animals to their field, a task that was easier than I had anticipated because they are well conditioned. I have photographed the gate latches and gaps to demonstrate that they cannot be unintentionally released. I have also photographed the light that was destroyed and rigged a temporary replacement. To help establish a pattern of vandalism I have filed a police report, and will continue to do so if there are additional incidents.

The temptation to lay a trap is strong, but I will first install the video cameras I have purchased and add more motion detector lighting along the out buildings. There are already “No Trespassing” signs at every perimeter entrance, but I may augment those with a more strident version.

We genuinely try to be nice people, yet we have pissed off all of our neighbors by expecting them to be law abiding and respectful of our property and livestock. If these trashy fuckers think we are assholes because we object to them burning mountains of rubber tires or allowing their dogs to attack our livestock they have yet to experience real strife.

Business model in need of remodel

What kind of idiot does it take to try to promote an online business by using a spam bot to post junk comments on the blogs and forums of people who are tech-savvy enoung to runs blogs and forums? The only thing I know that it for sure accomplishes is getting a domain blacklisted and making sure the spammer is subscribed to as much of the most vile porn on the intarweb.

One could make a hobby of annoying the owners of such a business.

To show exactly how stupid this spammer is I searched around a bit and found the same spam on blog posts including:

MIKE TYSON’s Daughter Dies
Surprise Approval of Fanapt Makes Stock Go Wild

…and on such classy domains as ”www.dirtyrottenwhore.com” et al. How could it fail?

Way of the World

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

It is a dog-eat-dog world, literally. There were some thoughts on this in my series of entries initiated by events recounted in Ignorance & Apathy, and capped off in later posts on the same issues. Well, if you ever think things can’t get worse, I’m afraid you are delusional.

The feral dog problem in our part of the world is out of control. The local animal shelter, animal control office & all rescue/foster organizations are totally overwhelmed since the recent economic downturn. I know because I called all of them today. The original population of abandoned dogs was a serious problem, but now the breeding age dogs have whelped at least twice and the population has exploded.

We are going to try to handle some of this ourselves. The plan is to trap the young animals and get them stable, if not healthy, have them spayed/neutered & vaccinated then try to adopt them out as best we can. Having them euthanized is, of course, the very final option. Large, potentially dangerous dogs that are too large to humanely trap will have to be destroyed.

Since we are both familiar with animal care and rudimentary medicine, we can handle most of the vaccinations, wound care and pest/parasite control, but it will be hugely demanding on our time and resources. If anyone has the motive, means or opportunity to assist in this project, please get in touch. Advice & assistance of any kind is welcome.

We have no idea what kind of legal position this might put us in or what liability it might open, but neither of us see a civilized alternative. If the cost of this bumps us out of building a new house, I guess that is the price we will have to pay. If I could pass on the cost to the irresponsible human trash that started this train wreck it would be quite a bill, I assure you. And it would come in the form of a check they would cash with their ass.

Memorial Day

There isn’t much to say that hasn’t been said better by people more qualified that I am. I will add this to the thoughts for today:  regardless of the holiday or date, if you know someone who has served in our military or is married to someone who is, please tell them thanks. Everyone one of our fighting men & women deserve our support and gratitude and each and every member of their families do to.

Thanks, Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines, for everything you have accomplished and sacrificed. My very best wishes to you all.

To my deceased family uncle Jack (Vietnam Service) and grandfather J.W. (WW-II, Pacific Campaign), both USMC to the core, thanks for what you passed on to me and all you did for our country. Semper Fidelis

Thanks Guest Blogger(s)

Thanks for taking up the slack while I was tied up with family obligations. By no means does this constitute a cease & desist order. Feel free to guest blog away. I will again be contributing my own generally worthless banter with more regularity, but a buttress never hurts.

Grrrr! Arrgh!

Nothing can ever be easy. Really.

Today I got the call to go get mom & dad from the hospital in Memphis. That was 08:45 this morning, but I have plenty of experience with this particular hospital so I got in no hurry. When I arrived at the patient pick-up two hours later I stiil waited in the car an additional half hour.

We made the trek home in pouring rain, stopped off for some takeout lunch and got the old folks settled in shortly after. A few minutes after finishing lunch and while starting to organize Mom’s medications for the week I started to feel odd myself. By the time I realized I was in trouble I was in the midst of another serious episode of hypertension. I managed to get a BP reading after a few tries, took my rescue medication and scribbled a few notes for the EMTs before my visual disturbances, chest pain and headache rendered me ineffective.

I was sweating profusely, getting dizzy and short of breath, so my poor parents had no choice but to call 911. This sucked on a number of levels, not the least of which was freaking out my mom just 45 minutes after being discharged from a hospital for her own problems. By the time I got into an ambulance and got to the ER my rescue medication had started working and things were returning to normal. I got heart attack & stroke ruled out, had a couple of nice discussions on biochemistry with the ER doctor & his staff (who really wonder about my bona fides in situations like this) and was sent on my way, several hundred dollars lighter.

This all stems from the pneumonia I had a few weeks ago. Fearing it was a complication from the meds I was one to prevent problems as described above, my doctor swapped them around to see if my breathing woes improved. They did, but now my blood pressure problem is totally out of control again. It took about three months to get it stabilized, so Wednesday when I see my doc I will insist on going back to the effective combination of drugs and just tell everyone that my chronic cough is from exposure to radiation when I vacationed in Chernobyl.

…and now for something completely different.

When you allow someone to become a guest blogger, you never can be quite sure what he or she will post. This one goes out to all the people who use the alphabet.

As a guest blogger, I am faced with a dilemma: what should I write about? I have my own blog, and I don’t want to repeat content. I don’t want to post anything that will get M. arrested, or make his blog a topic of discussion on national talk shows. And, I’d rather not write something that will be deliberately antagonistic to readers.

Following M.’s example, I’ve decided to stick with current issues and news that missed the radar. I recently received this in an email:

…The Fowler Drive Elementry School Garden …was vandilized last week.  …1st and 2nd grade teachers at Fowler Drive, had been working with their kids on a Peace, Power, and Action project all year long.  This culminated in a school garden with 7 raised beds as the community action project, all designed by the children.

Now, I’m not personally involved with this gardening initiative, but I have to admire the sad irony that a peace garden would be vandalized. No word around town about who the vandals were*. I’ll admit, my first reaction to this news was that, with a long-handled shovel and some room to swing, I could teach the perpetrators a thing or two. But, after some reflection, I realize that a peace garden might be exactly what the vandals need. It is interesting to me that violence in and around schools is recognized as a problem, but programs to teach antiviolence seem relatively scarce.  A few years back I had the chance to go through training in the Alternatives to Violence Project,  which works (among other places) in prisons to develop a culture of antiviolence and reduce recidivism. Since many schools are sort of like prisons, perhaps the same sort of approach would work there as well. Seems like a reasonable way to get out of the educational Cold War, with ever higher fences and more metal detectors.

I’ll keep readers in the loop if this story progresses further.

*Speaking here about vandals, not Vandals; I know who they were.

Time Out

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Yesterday I announced that I might be offline for a bit for personal reasons. That has not changed on its face, but the reasons have. My mom is back in the hospital for serious problems this time, and I will be handling quite a bit of extra responsibility.

My laptop may tag along as a DVD player, so could have internet access, but calls to my cell or text messaging would be best.

I have conscripted two guest author to amuse you while I am away. More volunteers are always welcome.

Detail about Mom are on the private forum.
